- The city is shown as a candidate for the European Capital of Culture based on innovation and shared values, within the framework of the EU Green Alliance
- The French city of Angers has also endorsed Cáceres’ bid
Nine European universities, along with the city of Angers (France), have expressed their support for Cáceres 2031’s bid for European Capital of Culture, joining an international network that connects higher education, research, and culture with the aim of strengthening Europe’s common future.
These are the University of Angers (France), the University of Évora (Portugal), the University of Parma (Italy), the Atlantic University of Technology (Ireland), the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg (Germany), the University of Wroclaw (Poland), the University of Gävle (Sweden), and the University of Oradea (Romania), in addition to the University of Extremadura (UEx).
The signatory universities are part of the EU Green Alliance, an academic alliance working around the objectives of the European Green Deal, the 2030 Agenda, and promoting student well-being as an essential part of the green and social transition, which held its COP1 Conference this week in Angers. This commitment positions universities not only as a space for knowledge, but also as a driver of cultural and social transformation in Europe.
Cáceres 2031 fits into this vision, proposing an ECoC that places sustainable culture, youth, and innovation at the center, and that understands universities as places where reflective thinking, values education, a love of culture, and work with new generations are fostered.
This international support strengthens Cáceres’s candidacy as a project that unites municipalities, peripheral territories, and committed universities, projecting Cáceres as a territory of cultural innovation, cooperation, and environmental commitment.
The general coordinator of Cáceres 2031, Iris Jugo, explained that “the support of these universities, located in peripheral territories and deeply committed to their students and the cities that host them, confirms that Cáceres 2031 is a project that unites education, research, and culture to build the future of Europe from its margins.”
For his part, Pedro Muriel, Councilor for Public Services, Environment, Internal Affairs, Strategic Funds, Mobility, and Security of the Cáceres City Council, explained that at this meeting, the cities that host the universities that are part of the EU Green Alliance worked to “exchange sustainability and urban development projects that improve the quality of life in cities.” Within this framework, Cáceres presented sustainable development and urban mobility projects.
