- Portuguese city to be European Capital of Culture in 2027
The candidacy of Cáceres 2031 has received the formal support of the Portuguese city of Évora to become European Capital of Culture. This support is an endorsement from the locality that already holds this title for 2027.
The support has been communicated through a letter sent by the president of the Board of Trustees of Évora 2027, Maria do Céu Ramos, which shows the commitment of the Portuguese city -designated European Capital of Culture for the year 2027- with the cultural project promoted by Cáceres.
In his letter, do Céu Ramos highlights “the consistent and fruitful collaboration between the Alentejo and Extremadura (…), a cross-border cooperation with evident benefits for their communities and for their common projection”.
In response, the mayor of the capital of Cáceres, Rafa Mateos, wanted to publicly thank this gesture, highlighting the symbolic and strategic value of the support of a city with which there are “numerous similarities, a shared heritage and deep cross-border roots”. According to him, this support is received “with honor, affection and great joy” by the city and the entire municipal government team.
Mateos also stressed the special importance of this support coming from a city that will be a protagonist of European culture in the near future. “Évora faces in 2027 a unique experience that will allow it to show all its cultural potential to the world, and whose legacy will undoubtedly be a benchmark for other European cities,” he said.
Cáceres 2031 has also wished Évora every success in the development of its project as European Capital of Culture, convinced that it will contribute to strengthen the Iberian cultural axis and the value of cooperation between neighboring territories. In addition, the heads of the European capital projects of both cities will collaborate in the development of joint projects. In fact, musicians from Évora have already participated in the show ‘Around Beethoven’s Ninth: Reconstructing Humanity’, held in Cáceres in December.
This new international endorsement reinforces the European dimension of the Cáceres 2031 bid and consolidates its commitment to a culture based on collaboration, shared heritage and a common European identity.
