Cáceres 2031 presented ‘On Blank Pages’ this Wednesday, an artistic and participatory installation that will transform Plaza de Santa María, in the heart of the Old Town, into a shared creative space. The opening will take place this Friday, October 31st, at 8:00 p.m., and the artwork will remain on display throughout the weekend, open to free participation from residents and visitors.
‘On Blank Pages’ is composed of thousands of illuminated blank notebooks, arranged on a structure that invites people to write, draw, or leave anonymous thoughts. This surface of paper and light will become a large page open to the city, a living archive of emotions and reflections that will transform throughout the weekend. The installation champions the value of the analog in the face of digital immediacy, recovering the intimate gesture of handwriting and the power of shared words.
Prior to its inauguration, several notebooks were distributed to schools, cultural associations, and senior centers in Cáceres so that people could record their thoughts, memories, and wishes. These initial contributions will form part of the installation, symbolizing the diversity of voices that shape the city’s identity and its involvement in the journey toward becoming a European Capital of Culture.
During the project’s presentation, the Councilor for Culture of the Cáceres City Council, Jorge Suárez, emphasized that ‘On Blank Pages’ “poetically reflects the values that inspire Cáceres’ 2031 bid: participation, diversity, freedom of expression, and dialogue.”
“Cáceres is the perfect setting for this work. Because here, history coexists with contemporary creation; here, heritage is not a burden, but a root from which we continue to grow. We want everyone to feel part of a shared narrative, to understand that culture is not just about contemplation, but also about participating, sharing, and leaving a mark,” he added.
The installation arrives in Cáceres in a format adapted to the heritage setting of the Plaza de Santa María. Its simple design—based on paper, light, and words—creates a poetic presence that respects the historic space, which will be illuminated at nightfall to become a large light box open to the public.
Furthermore, the project incorporates a European dimension, as it will allow the exchange of notebooks and messages with other cities on the continent. In this way, ‘On Blank Pages’ expands its symbolic meaning: Cáceres, together with Europe, writes a shared history based on culture, creativity, and dialogue.
Therefore, the public is invited to come to Plaza de Santa María this weekend to participate in this collective, ephemeral, and luminous experience that transforms words into art and culture into a shared space.
‘On White Leaves’ is an installation designed by Luzinterruptus and produced by Tres Elefantas and Ciudadano Kien. It will be open for adding white leaves on Friday from 8:00 p.m. to midnight, Saturday from noon to midnight, and Sunday from noon to 10:00 p.m.
