The monumental city of Cáceres “rebuilds humanity” with Beethoven’s Ninth on its way to becoming European Capital of Culture in 2031

  • Thousands of people enjoy a show in which more than 240 artists have been involved.

Thousands of people enjoyed this Saturday the show “Around Beethoven’s Ninth: Rebuilding Humanity”, organized by Cáceres 2031 and which took place in the monumental city, turning it into a great stage.

Specifically, the traveling show has toured the churches of San Juan, San Mateo, Santo Domingo and Santiago, in a musical tour involving more than 240 artists and volunteers.

The event is conceived as a contemporary reading of the Ninth Symphony, inviting citizens to reflect on the human condition and the meaning of Europe in an international context marked by uncertainty and conflicts at the continent’s borders. The show has articulated the symphony by movements, distributing them on the different stages mentioned above and sharing them with Évora as a gesture of cross-border cultural collaboration. This dialogue between the two cities reinforces the European dimension of the project and symbolizes a desire for cooperation based on culture as a bridge between peoples.

With this show, Cáceres 2031 continues on its path to place culture at the center of public life, using music, European cooperation and collective work as engines to rethink the present and project a shared future.

Scottish-born Simon Sharkey, director of The Necessary Space, has been in charge of the dramaturgy. Meanwhile, the four movements have counted with:

Arrangement for fourteen wind instruments with musicians from the University of Évora, conducted by Jorge García Cuenllas.

– Second Movement (San Mateo Church)
