- The Councillor for Culture, Jorge Suárez, is participating in the annual summit of the European Festivals Association, where he has defended the role of culture “as a way of building Europe from the local level”
The Councillor for Culture, Jorge Suárez, is representing the Cáceres European Capital of Culture 2031 Consortium during the Arts Festivals Summit 2026 taking place these days in Budva (Montenegro) and organized by the European Festivals Association (EFA).
During this event, the Cáceres Consortium formalized its membership in this association, the oldest cultural network of festivals in Europe, which promotes exchange between artists and creators and the development of cultural policies. The Mérida Festival is among its members.
Suárez defended the role of culture “as a way of building Europe from the local level, through participation, creativity and shared values”, within the framework of Cáceres’ candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2031.
The councilor conveyed to the European cultural representatives that the incorporation of the EFA into the community represents “a natural step within our city project,” highlighting Cáceres’ commitment to understanding festivals as meeting places for citizens, artists, and territories.
In his speech, Jorge Suárez highlighted the work the city has been doing to strengthen cultural networks, promote international collaborations and encourage citizen participation, while also defending culture as a tool for social cohesion, sustainability and transformation.
The councilor stressed that this seal represents for Cáceres “an opportunity to learn, share and actively contribute to a more united Europe through culture.”
Cáceres’ participation in this international meeting is part of the European and international projection strategy linked to the candidacy of Cáceres European Capital of Culture 2031, consolidating the city’s presence in leading cultural forums and strengthening alliances with European institutions and festivals.
