- They will request the Ministry of Culture to establish the title “Spanish Capital of Culture”, as it exists in the fields of sports or gastronomy.
Cáceres will be part of the working group formed within the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces -sponsored by the Committee on Culture and Historical Heritage-, which will work so that the twelve candidate cities for the European Capital of Culture in 2031 see their work recognized by the Ministry of Culture.
This was announced by the president of the FEMP and mayor of Jerez de la Frontera, María José García-Pelayo, in the presence of representatives of the candidacies of Burgos, Cáceres, Granada, Jerez, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, León, Oviedo, Palma, Potries (Valencia) and Toledo. The total number of applications announced so far is twelve, although some more may be announced by the end of December, since the deadline for submitting applications is December 28.
According to the president of the FEMP, promoter of the group and responsible for transferring it to the Committee on Culture and the Governing Board, the aim is to ensure that all the work done during these months, the infrastructures available, the activities developed and the resources put in place do not fall on deaf ears”.
“We are culture”, García-Pelayo stressed, and reiterated the offer that the FEMP be the interlocutor of these cities with the Ministry of Culture in order to commit the necessary funding for the city that is finally chosen. The same ministry will be asked to establish the title “Spanish Capital of Culture”, as a complement to the European program, as they exist in the fields of sports or gastronomy.
On behalf of Cáceres, Iris Jugo, general coordinator of the Cáceres European Capital of Culture 2031 Consortium, participated in this meeting.
